BOOK WELL IN ADVANCE
To make sure you get the right vehicle for your motor home hire book well in advance. Many people leave it until the last minute and then risk getting a motor home which is not ideally suited to their needs.

PLAN YOUR TRIP (AND RETURN JOURNEY)
For some people camper hire is about heading off on the open road and taking each day as it comes. However, most have a specific destination or route in mind. In which case, plan your trip, make sure distances travelled are realistic and give yourself an easy last day to make sure you get the camper back feeling relaxed and in plenty of time.

BOOK CAMPSITES AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE
You will be surprised how popular motorhome rental is and how far in advance campsites get booked up. (Some campsites get fully booked for the peak season on the day the phone lines open for booking!) Having planned your trip don’t forget to book your place at any campsites you intend to use.

DON’T PACK TOO MUCH STUFF
Two things to consider here: camper hire with a camper full to overflowing with gear isn’t fun. You are camping – limit yourself to the sort of things you need when camping and no more. Secondly weight; campers do have weight limits and you just need to think about this when fully loaded with people, gear, fuel, water etc.

SOFT BAGS NOT SUITCASES
Campervan hire is partly about how you use the space available to you. Soft bags (unlike suitcases) will help you use all of the storage space and be much less cumbersome.

HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?
When you come to collect your camper van you will be given a “Handover” where it is explained how everything works. Listen to what is said! Difficult I know when you are bursting to get in and start your holiday, but take your time and try to take in all that is said – it will save you problems later on.

TAKE IT EASY
OK, so now you are ready to set off and you will notice that the dimensions of your motorhome are a bit different to your car. You are driving a large box with four corners that stick out. Take it nice and slow to start with – people are used to be held up behind motorhomes!

RUNNING ON GAS
It’s a lovely morning, the sun is shining and the smell of sizzling bacon is just starting to circulate when, phut! The gas runs out – not happy. Make sure you replace the gas bottle if you empty it and that you always have a spare one full and ready to take over.

DON’T TRANSPORT WATER
Something to bear in mind if your planned motorhome rental involves stopping at campsites is to use their facilities rather than carry around tons of water. Empty both fresh water and waste water tanks to reduce weight before leaving a site and fill up with fresh water on arrival at the next site.

CAMPSITE FACILITIES ARE THERE TO BE USED
When staying at a campsite, if you use their electric hook up, toilets, showers and washing facilities as much as possible it will save you time and effort filling, emptying, replacing fuel and water on your campervan.

AWNING WARNING
An awning makes campervan rental pleasant in that it gives you a nice shaded area to sit out in. But have you noticed how they resemble a sail? Yep, they catch the wind and can be easily damaged, so beware. And never leave your camper van for the day with the awning out – it is likely that there will be at least one strong gust of wind in a day.

YOU’RE CAMPING – RELAX THINGS HAPPEN!
Finally, try and take a slightly Zen approach to camper rental. As luxurious as modern campers are, you are still camping and things do happen. It’s part of the appeal and remember, there is never a problem that can’t be solved. Make sure you have all of the relevant phone numbers you’ll need with you and don’t let the small things prey on your mind.
